FDA Commissioner Hamburg to Step Down

One of the longest-serving FDA commissioners, Margaret Hamburg, MD, is stepping down after nearly six years on the job. She told Reuters that “her decision was prompted by the heavy demands of the job and the sheer length of time she has held the position.” Dr. Hamburg oversaw public health initiatives from tobacco control to drug and device approvals. Stephen Ostroff, MD, chief scientist with the FDA, will fill her position until a new commissioner is named. Full story.
